Maryland has implemented updated regulations that affect how businesses must operate weight-based transactions. These rules apply to all commercial scales used for pricing items by weight.

To help your business stay compliant, this article outlines what the state requires and how to configure your workflow when using Cents.

Maryland law now mandates that:

1. All scale readings must be entered manually

Automated or system-read weights are not permitted.

This means weights captured electronically from a scale using a scale adapter cannot be transferred directly into your POS system.

Your staff must manually type the weight into the Cents POS during checkout.

2. Your scale must include a customer-facing display

The display must clearly show:

  • Weight

  • Price

This screen must remain visible to the customer during the entire weighing process to ensure full transparency.

What This Means for Your Workflow

To comply with these regulations:

  1. Weigh items on your commercial scale.

Ensure the scale has a customer-facing display showing the live weight and price.

  2. Enter the weight manually in Cents.

When adding a weighed item during checkout, your staff will type the weight shown on the scale display.

  3. Confirm with the customer.

The customer should be able to see the weight and price on the scale display while the item is being weighed.

These steps ensure your business remains compliant with Maryland’s regulatory requirements.
