How to Connect Your Cash Drawer (Sunmi POS or Mobile Bundle)

Learn how to set up and enable cash drawer functionality in Cents

Written by Euri

Connecting an APG cash drawer lets the Cents Employee App pop the drawer open automatically on cash payments, and whenever you open it from the app. The drawer always opens through a printer: the built-in printer on a Sunmi POS, or the receipt printer in the Cents Mobile Bundle.

Use this if you're setting up a new cash drawer with a Sunmi POS or a Mobile Bundle, or fixing a drawer that won't open.

Before you start

  • You have Admin access to Cents Business Manager.

  • You have an APG cash drawer and the APG Printer Interface Cable CD-101A. It has two different-sized ends.

  • If you print receipts on a separate Sunmi Cloud Printer, connect the drawer to that printer instead of the Sunmi.

Step 1: Turn on cash and the cash drawer in Business Manager

  • Click Admin, open Locations, and select your location.

  • Click the three-dot menu in the top right and choose Configure Payment Options.

  • Turn on Accept cash payments and Cash Drawer tracking, then click Save. New locations have both on by default.

Step 2a: Connect the drawer to a Sunmi POS

  • Turn the cash drawer over and plug the larger end of the cable into the port on the bottom.

  • Plug the smaller end into the cash drawer port on the back of the Sunmi.

  • Turn the drawer right side up, remove all packing material, and turn the key to the unlocked (vertical) position.

Step 2b: Connect the drawer to a Mobile Bundle printer

  • Plug the larger end of the cable into the bottom of the cash drawer.

  • Open the bottom cover of your receipt printer and plug the other end into the cash drawer port (it looks like an Ethernet port).

  • Put the printer cover back on and turn the printer right side up.

  • Make sure the printer is on, has paper, and shows connected in the Employee App.

  • Turn the drawer key to the unlocked (vertical) position.

Step 3: Test the drawer

  • In the Employee App, make sure the drawer is started. Cash Drawer should show Active on the Home screen.

  • Open Cash Drawer from the menu, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Open Cash Drawer. The drawer should pop open.

Set the cash drawer voltage (Sunmi POS only, if needed)

  • On the Sunmi, go to Settings > Cashbox (on some models, Settings > System > Cash drawer).

  • Set the voltage to 24V and test again. If that doesn't work, try 12V, then 9V. Most APG drawers use 24V.

Troubleshooting

Work through these in order. Most drawers that won't open are fixed by one of the first four.

  • Cash Drawer doesn't show Active on the Home screen.
Start the drawer first: tap Cash Drawer, enter your starting cash, and start it. The drawer won't open from the app until it's started.

  • Nothing happens when you tap Open Cash Drawer.
Check Accept cash payments and Cash Drawer tracking are on in Configure Payment Options and saved. On a Mobile Bundle, also check the printer is on, has paper, and shows connected under the menu icon > Connections.

  • The cable won't fit.
It's backward. The larger end goes into the drawer. Never force it.

  • Using a regular Ethernet or phone cable?
It won't work, even if it fits. Use the APG Printer Interface Cable CD-101A.

  • You hear a click but the drawer stays shut.
Turn the key to unlocked (vertical) and remove any packing material.

  • It opens with the key but not from the app.
Reseat both ends of the cable. On a Sunmi POS, check the voltage. On a Mobile Bundle, confirm the printer is connected in the app.

  • The drawer is on the Sunmi, but the app uses a cloud printer.
If Use Sunmi Cloud Printer as Default is on in the Employee App's connection settings, the open signal goes to the cloud printer. Turn it off and test again.

  • It stopped right after you tapped Clear cache in Connections.
Known issue. Fully close the Employee App and open it again.

  • It opens on demand but not during a sale.
The drawer only opens automatically for cash payments.

  • It worked for weeks and then stopped.
Restart the device, reseat the cable, and recheck the voltage. Text our Support team before any factory reset, since a reset clears your printer and scanner setup.

  • It won't open even with the key, or arrived damaged.
It may be jammed or broken. Text our Support team about a replacement.
